A new hut which will be used as a community hub has been unveiled at Lesbury Post Office.

The village venue was awarded £10,000 from the Community Enterprise Fund for the much-needed facility.

Generous donations from local organisations and individuals totalling between £3,000 and £4,000 also helped pay for the structure and associated landscaping.

The cosy building, which seats around eight people, can be used for ad-hoc meetings, a coffee and a chat or more formal group get-togethers. It will also act as a dementia information point.

Sub-postmistress Carol Southam said: “We are delighted with this and so is the community and people have lots of ideas for it.

“It all dates back to 2009, when, in the Lesbury Village Plan, it was identified that an informal meeting place was one of the things that the community wanted.

“The post office also provides takeaway coffees and has an outdoor seating area, but this was weather reliant.”

A few years ago, the branch was temporarily closed, but villagers battled to reopen it.

Carol said: “This just shows what you can do with a really good community ethos.”

The facility is open during post-office opening hours.

It can also be booked outside of normal operating hours. To book, visit the post office.
