A new bus service around Coquetdale could be up and running by the end of the year.

Spirit Buses is a new company being set up by Rothbury’s Steve Hurst to provide routes around Rothbury and Coquetdale as services have been lost over the years.

The Gazette reported last month that Steve was planning on setting up a series of bus routes to fulfil a local need.

Since then questionnaires have been put out for residents to complete and the responses so far have been positive.

Steve said: “We have had the questionnaires out for just over two weeks now and have had a fantastic positive response from residents of Coquetdale and visitors to the area. There seems to be a strong demand for our three intended services with some people even describing them as a ‘lifeline’ to them.”

He will now compile all the data and collate it to determine the most viable times and routes and then go onto approaching various sources for finance and funding.

He added that hopefully the services could be in operation by Christmas or the beginning of 2014.

Steve added: “I’d like to thank the many locations and volunteers who have distributed the paper questionnaires and to all those who have filled them in with valuable feedback.”
