A water treatment plant in Northumberland is set to benefit from a multi-million pound upgrade.

Northumbrian Water’s Warkworth Water Treatment Works (WTW) will undergo a £2.2million refurbishment to help maintain and enhance top quality drinking water for the future.

The work will involve renewing water pumps, filters and computer control stations.

Warkworth WTW treats up to 42 million litres of water per day and supplies 92,000 customers in Northumberland, including Alnwick, Morpeth, Ashington and surrounding areas.

Work will begin on Monday, January 12, and is expected to take up to nine months to complete.

Michael Walsh, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “The treatment works will remain fully operational while we upgrade the site and there won’t be any impact on the water service we provide to customers as a result.

“During the course of the project, there may be occasions when construction traffic will need access to the site and we are working closely with construction company, Amey, to keep any disruption to a minimum.”
