LIB DEM MP Sir Alan Beith has welcomed news that mountain rescue teams will receive £200,000 in additional funding each year for the next four years.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander said funding will be available to 75 teams performing mountain or cave rescue activity across UK and will help support the costs of expensive rescue equipment.

Sir Alan said: “The work of mountain rescue teams is absolutely essential and our local Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue team do a vital work keeping tourists and locals safe in the hills and valleys across our area.

“The Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for increased funding and recognition of the teams so I warmly welcome this step which represents the first time the UK Government has given direct funding to mountain rescue services.”

But he said people still need to support the service.
