MP visits home set for closure

NORTH Northumberland MP Sir Alan Beith has met residents of a sheltered housing unit, which is set to close.

In August, the Gazette reported that Johnnie Johnson Housing had made an ‘in principle’ decision to close Johnson House in Longhoughton.

A formal consultation ended at the start of September before a decision was taken by the board of management.

Sir Alan said: “At the meeting I spoke to a number of residents who are very sad about the closure of Johnson House, which has been a very happy and well-run part of the local community.

“However the residents were full of praise for the efforts the management are taking to help them find other accommodation and say that everyone is being very helpful.

“Johnnie Johnson Housing has given a firm assurance that the complex will not close until everyone has been found somewhere else to live and that residents will not be put under pressure to move until they have found somewhere suitable for their needs.”
