More verdicts in former Rothbury teacher indecent assaults case

A former Rothbury teacher has today been found guilty of seven more counts of indecent assault and not guilty of five others.

Joseph Kinnear, 59, of East Newtown Cottages, has been standing trial at Newcastle Crown Court after pleading not guilty to 14 counts of indecent assault, relating to three girls, dating back to between 1975 and 1982 when they were aged between 11 and 14.

At the time, Kinnear was a teacher at Dr Thomlinson’s Middle School in Rothbury and Beaumont Middle School in Hexham.

On Friday, the jury found Kinnear guilty of two charges of indecent assault. Today, they found that seven more offences had been proved but also returned verdicts of not guilty on five others.

Four of the guilty verdicts were returned by a majority of 10 to two.

Kinnear was remanded in custody and was was told by Judge Hickey to expect a prison sentence.

The case was adjourned for reports and Kinnear will appear for sentencing next month.
