Three men have been jailed after a series of shoplifting offences.
The thefts took place on Monday between 2.45pm and 7.40pm at five Co-Op stores in Haltwhistle, Newcastle, Lynemouth, Widdrington and Hadston and involved stolen alcohol and Nurofen tablets.
Three men were arrested as they fled over the border into Scotland and appeared before South East Northumberland magistrates in Bedlington, all charged with conspiracy to commit theft.
Marian Stirbescu, 28, of Palmerston Road, London, was jailed for eight weeks, Ioan Doroftei, 35, of Dalmarnock Drive, Glasgow, was jailed for six weeks and Adrian Trusca, 23, of Aberfoyle Street, Glasgow, was was jailed for seven weeks.
Northumberland Superintendent Mick Paterson said: “We will not tolerate travelling gangs coming into our area and committing offences.”
