ALNWICK’S mayor paid tribute to the work done by HospiceCare North Northumberland as he presented it with a £500 donation.

Mayor Alan Symmonds passed on a cheque to his chosen charity that had been donated by Wilkinson upon its store opening in the town in August.

Coun Symmonds said: “When I was elected mayor I had no hesitation in continuing with HospiceCare North Northumberland as the mayor’s charity.

“I did it in remembrance of my dear mother-in-law who died in October and for whom we received a lot of hospice care.

“I know that while this is a fantastic building and they do fabulous work here and in Berwick, people don’t understand the considerable outreach program the charity offers.

“It’s much more than a building, it’s a total service and I can certainly testify to the value it offers.

“To me it seems the ideal charity and I hope to be making many more donations as my year in office continues.”

He also praised Wilkinson who offered to make a donation without any hesitation when they asked him to open the store.

“It shows their commitment and I hope their strong community links continue,” he added.
