A North-East man was airlifted to hospital last night after falling from a rock face while climbing in north Northumberland.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to assist the North East Ambulance Service at 7.30pm yesterday after the man, from Newcastle, fell from a rock face while climbing near Belford.

The patient, aged 41 to 50, was found at the base of the cliff with multiple injuries and was treated on scene by the GNAAS team before being evacuated to the aircraft by HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) and mountain-rescue teams.

The man, who suffered what are described as severe/serious injuries, was stable when he arrived at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, near Cramlington.
