A SUPER slimmer from Amble has spoken of her pride after she reached the finals of a national weight-loss competition – having shed a whopping 8st 3lb in under a year.

Michaela Herdman, from Leslie Drive, was one of just 48 women from across the UK to reach the finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2011.

The 33-year-old lost the weight after joining the Amble Slimming World group in August 2010, going from 20st 10.5lb to 12st 7.5lb.

Her stunning transformation and new-found confidence inspired her group to vote her as its representative in the annual competition.

And after winning the regional heat, Michaela secured a place in the national finals, which were held earlier this month and co-hosted by TV doctor Hilary Jones.

“It was a great feeling to reach the finals,” she said. “Not just for myself but I was also representing my group. It was a lovely day.”

Her body overhaul was down to a combination of exercise and dietary changes, and it has left her feeling better about herself.

“Now I’m slimmer, I’m more confident and I’m a lot fitter,” she said. “I go swimming three or four times a week at Amble’s Granary Leisure Complex, when before I lost the weight I did no exercise at all.”

Michaela has praised Slimming World for her results.

“It was completely different to anything else I’d tried,” she admits. “I did have to make changes to the way that I cooked and ate, of course, but they were small changes made easy at Slimming World.

“I loved tucking into delicious healthy meals and watching the pounds fall off.

“If ever my motivation did start to fade, my consultant and the rest of the group were there to remind me how far I’d come. We talked and laughed a lot.”

Slimming World consultant Shirley Knox, who runs the Amble group, said: “Michaela is not only looking great but she’s added years to her life and become a role model in our local community.”

Dr Jones added: “Michaela is looking so lovely and healthy. I hope her story inspires lots of other people in her town to follow her lead and transform their health too.”

Michaela did not reach the final 10 of the Woman of the Year 2011 competition. The overall winner will be announced next month.

The Amble group meets every Monday at 6pm at Trinity Methodist Church. To join, call Shirley on 07754 155224 or visit www.slimmingworld.com
