Longhoughton and Boulmer WI, January meeting

There was a very good turn out for Longhoughton and Boulmer WI’s first meeting of 2013.

Everyone was ready to get back on track, after all the festivities.

Speaking of festivities, our Christmas party night was a great success, the boys from the Wine Boutique in Narrowgate treated us to a wine tasting evening.

They talked us through some beautiful wines which washed down the crusty bread, cheese and tasty nibbles.

They demonstrated opening a bottle of fizz with a sword. Not recommended for home, especially after a glass or two.

Back to January and business for the month.

We enjoyed our visits to the Playhouse and decided to book for Les Mis, Quartet and the Theatre Club’s production of Calendar Girls.

There will be a ragrugging meeting on Tuesday evenings for anyone who wants a chat on these winter nights.

The Federation quiz will be held on March 1 and reading aloud on March 12. There is not much time to choose poetry and practice.

We hope to enter the bowls this year and there is a beetle drive at Shilbottle on March 11, so quite a bit going on.

We have been given knitting patterns for shawls, baby pullovers and hats for patients in the fistula hospital in Ethiopia, could keep us busy when it’s too cold and wet outside.

We were joined by Helen Grierson to talk to us about her stained and fused glass.

She started her business after finishing teaching.

She joined Network Artists, which included an art tour, worked from the Biscuit Factory for a while then moved to premises at Eshott.

She had brought some beautiful samples of her work and showed us some very impressive slides of her commissioned work. She also organises workshops for small and larger groups.

She is booked to return in March when we will have the chance to make our own fused glass piece.

We then enjoyed a tasty supper, caught up with all the news while Helen judged Joan Riley to have the winning paper weight in the competition.

The February competition is Something Tartan as we are having a Burns supper with Scottish dancing. This will be held in Westfield Park on February 5.

We still have a swimming session on Monday evenings, from 7pm to 8pm, cost £3. a great way to combine socialising with some exercise.
