Concern for paramedics
Dr Charles Dean of the Glendale Surgery attended Monday’s council meeting, updating members on the recent changes in the health service.
“You might have heard,” he said, “that GPs have been put in charge of the money, but that’s not what has happened.”
He stressed that local surgeries still received their funding under the NHS North of Tyne consortium.
Dr Dean also urged councillors to look into the practice of their local paramedic service, and the current situation which sees them ‘pulled away’ from the area to cover crews as far afield as Berwick.
This was, he said, due to their working methods, whereby they do not take time off for lunch.
The council asked that Steve Jones, team leader, be asked about the situation through the council clerk.
Dr Dean and PC Andy Clark confirmed that a defibrillator has been provided to police, with their final training taking place this week.
VILLAGE BLOOMS TO TAKE SILVER AWARD
Mrs Brenda Affleck attended the council meeting to update members on Wooler’s performance in the Northumbria In Bloom competition. The village was awarded a silver. Members agreed the preponderance of listed buildings made hanging baskets difficult, but entry in the competition would go on.
HELP FOR LOCAL HOME HUNTERS
The council is to look into possible ways of publicising the Homefinder service. It is felt that too many people are unaware of the service, which works with Bernicia, Berwick Borough Housing, ISOS and Homes for Northumberland. One method being looked at is a link on the council’s upcoming website.
A SYMBOL FOR WOOLER?
Coun Alfreda Hindmarsh said she had attended the Flodden commemorations, representing the village.
Told to carry a symbol of Wooler among the border town banners, she asked herself what the symbol of Wooler is? The council agreed to ask Wooler Middle School to design one in a competition.
COUNCILLORS TO DEVELOP SNOW PLAN
Coun Rosanna Reed related a request from members of last year’s group dealing with snow for a meeting to determine a plan for this year. It was agreed the earlier the organisation of such a plan the better, and that a meeting should be held to build on the strengths and weaknesses of the 2012 plan.
