Wooler cycle event was ‘wheely’ good
The first outing of a cycle challenge in Glendale was hailed as a success, with nearly 300 cyclists taking part.
The riders came from all over the north of England to take up the challenge of the inaugural Wooler Wheel cyclo-sportive.
They had chosen one of two routes which were respectively 103km (64 miles) and 56km (35 miles) long.
The total ascent of the longer route, at 1,474m (4835 feet) was almost equivalent to climbing two Cheviots, one on top of the other.
Organiser-in-chief, Beth Mills, said that the principle for designing the routes had been simple; this was meant to be a stretching challenge so the route designers just thought of all the steepest banks they had cycled up in Glendale and joined them together until the longest route was more than 100km long.
The result was a route which made its way through the finest landscapes in Glendale giving spectacular views of mountain, plain, river, and sea; reaching south to Old Bewick and all the way over to Carham on the River Tweed and back to Wooler, by way of Chatton, Lyham Bank, Heatherslaw, Branxton and Milfield.
A Wooler B&B owner said: “We had several guests staying with us over the weekend who were taking part in the Wooler Wheel.
“They all commented on how well organised the event was, how fantastic the routes were, how brilliant the post-run pasta was, how friendly everyone was, and above all, what a great time they had.
“They all plan to come back next year, bringing friends and club members with them.”
