In our third mystery this week, we ask why are strips of 16mm camera film periodically washing up on a north Northumberland beach?

One of our readers explained that he has found washed-out bits of film (such as that pictured to the right) on Annstead beach between Seahouses and Beadnell on a number of occasions during recent years.

Mike Hosken, who runs www.seahouseswebsite.co.uk, said: “The Annstead beach is part of the regular stamping ground for my dogs and myself.

“I’ve been surprised to find bits of 16mm film from time to time – perhaps half-a-dozen times per year over the past four years or so.

“It is, naturally, all heavily damaged, normally missing the edge perforations.

“I can guarantee that no image is recoverable, but still I’m intrigued as to how quantities of 16mm film come to be in the sea in the first place and then how they are washed up, albeit in short lengths like this, over an extended period of years.”

Perhaps one of our readers may be able to explain why the film has ended up in the sea in the first place or why it has washed ashore over such a long period of time.
