What a bloomin’ great performance!
Towns and villages from across north Northumberland have come away with prizes from this year’s Northumbria in Bloom competition.
Pick of the bunch was Warkworth, which took the title in the best large village category.
There were also gold awards for Alnwick (best small town), Lowick (best village), silvers for Lesbury (best village) and a silver gilt for Wooler (best large village).
In the special awards, Terry Garnick, of Northumberland County Council, won the title for outstanding contribution by a salaried individual in support of Northumbria in Bloom.
There was also a bronze for Hawkhill Business Park, Lesbury (best business park) and golds for Bridge End Park, Wooler, New Barns Court, Warkworth and Prospect Close Community Garden, Felton, (best combined efforts of residents of a clearly defined community).
Abbeyfield Care Home in Alnwick (gold) and The Old Vicarage Residential Home in Wooler (silver gilt) were successful in the best care home category while Wooler gained another gold for best conservation project with Wooler Common.
In the best commercial premises category, the Aydon House B&B, Alnwick, won a silver gilt and Foxton Hall Golf Club won a silver.
Alnmouth Station was awarded a silver gilt in the best bus, metro or railway station category while Lesbury’s Coach Inn and Alnwick’s White Swan Hotel won gold in the pub and hotel category.
In the allotments category, Alnwick’s St James’ Allotments also won gold.
The overall winner was Morpeth, always a top competitor at Northumbria in Bloom awards.
The prizes were presented this morning at the prestigious Northumbria in Bloom awards ceremony held in Spennymoor Leisure Centre by special guest, Lady Elsie Robson, widow of Sir Bobby Robson.
Chairman of Northumbria in Bloom, Eileen Burn, said: “In spite of the atrocious weather this year, local councils and communities have worked tirelessly to make everywhere look as good as possible.
“We salute the heroes who have dedicated themselves to the hard work that has been needed.
“This isn’t just about winning certificates and trophies. It is about taking pride in where you live because you want people to enjoy the local environment.
“We have seen some heart-lifting examples of triumph over adversity in recent weeks during the Olympics and Paralympics, and I think that spirit burns in all of you here today who aren’t afraid to work hard to achieve the results you want. Great things can be done even when the money is scarce.”
