Weekend may be the moment for ship rescue on Northumberland coast

Plans for a salvage attempt on MV Danio, which became stranded off the Farne Islands on Saturday, were delayed yesterday by the weather and sea and conditions.

We reported yesterday that it had been suggested locally that tides would prevent any rescue for a fortnight.

But the Seceretary of State’s representative for maritime salvage and intervention, Hugh Shaw, has been reported as saying fresh attempts may be made this weekend.

He explained that the salvers think there will be enough water to play with by then, particularly from Sunday onwards.

The 80-metre vessel Danio made a distress call in the early hours of Saturday morning after running aground near the Little Harcar rock, very close to the islands’ lighthouse.

Carrying timber, it was on its way from Perth to Antwerp when it ran straight into the rocks.

Initial efforts to tow the vessel clear failed, and an attempt to move it by tugboat at high tide on Saturday evening was abandoned at dark as the scale of the problem became apparent.

The German-owned Antigua-registered vessel, carrying timber, was not thought to be badly damaged and there are no reports of any fuel leaks.

At present, the six-strong crew remain on board.
