Web news is free again
A PAYWALL trial being conducted by the Northumberland Gazette's website has come to an end.
The Gazette was chosen by its parent group Johnston Press as one of six titles to test the water by charging for its news and sport content.
The trial was initially planned to take place over a three-month period, starting at the end of November, but was extended by one month to ensure sufficient data was collected.
It was the first phase of an ongoing review of how Johnston Press should manage its news provision online.
The Gazette website is now operating as normal with free access to all stories and features.
All content which was blocked or behind a paywall will become freely available.
Gazette editor Paul Larkin said: "Staff here have felt excited and privileged to be at the forefront of trials that could shape the future of journalism and news supply.
"We have had a lot of interest, particularly from the world's media, and I notice that Rupert Murdoch has recently announced the Times Online will be introducing subscriptions in June.
"I would like to thank all those who subscribed to the Gazette during the trial period and everyone who sent in their comments. They have been a helpful part of the review process."
