Warnings of ‘heavy thundery downpours’

The Met Office has issued a warning that rain later this afternoon could lead to localised surface water flooding and difficult driving conditions in the North East.

Their chief forecaster’s assessment reads: “A warm humid airmass is covering much of England.

“As a cold front moves slowly eastwards across some western areas of Britain today, some heavy thundery downpours are likely to be triggered further to the east.

“Although many places will miss the downpours, where they do occur there is the possibility of 25mm of rain falling in an hour leading to localised surface water flooding.”
