Villages make it onto property rich list

HOUSE prices in three north Northumberland areas are among the highest in the region.

In the Property Rich List 2008, published by Zoopla.co.uk, Alnwick, Bamburgh and Chathill were named in the top 10 areas of Northumberland.

Bamburgh came out the best in the area.

Based on the average home value, Bamburgh was ranked the third highest value town and came fifth in the highest value areas section.

The seaside village's average home value of 263,982 ensured Bamburgh (NE69) beat off competition from locations including Hexham (NE47) and Stocksfield (NE43) in the highest value areas category.

Meanwhile, Alnwick ranked seventh in the highest value towns section with an average home value of 201,013.

The county town of Northumberland out-scored Morpeth as a top value town. Morpeth's average value is 188,755.

Chathill was also above Morpeth.

Chathill was ranked the eighth highest value town in the region with a price of 198,166.

Topping the lists were Newcastle (NE20) with 389,191 and Riding Mill with 359,058 in the highest value areas and highest value towns respectively.

Other areas of the survey included the highest and lowest value streets and the lowest value towns and areas.

Jane Young, chartered surveyor and valuer at estate agent Rook Matthews Sayer in Alnwick, said: "I am not surprised that Bamburgh is high, it has always achieved premium prices.

"The Chathill post code includes Beadnell and Ellingham.

"You have a coastal location in Beadnell and going closer in land is very accessible to the A1.

"And I am not surprised that Alnwick is there because it is still the best place to live."

l Meanwhile, a Halifax survey says house prices in Seahouses have been among the strongest growth in the country in the last five years.

It says the average price rose from 96,290 in March 2003 to 203,061 in March this year, a growth of 111 per cent.

Jane Young said an influx of new developments, such as those at Kingsfield and land near Broad Road, had pushed up the house prices.
