Hours after a second filling station opened in Alnwick, what looks like the makings of a price war has begun.
Last night, after a day of frantic activity at the new Rontec/BP garage at Cawledge, it opened and aimed a shot across the bow of the only other petrol station in town, operated by Co-op/Total, with lower fuel prices.
Unleaded petrol was priced 129.9p at Cawledge, compared with 133.9p at the Co-op garage, while diesel was 135.9p, compared with 138.9p.
But this morning, the Co-op/Total operation hit back by lowered their prices to match the new kid in town. They both stand at 129.9p for unleaded and 135.9p for diesel.
Now the Gazette has had a tip-off that Rontec and BP are planning to bring their prices down this week.
It has been a long-running complaint of Alnwick motorists that the Willowtree site has had a monopoly ever since the closure of Willis’ garage on South Road and there has been no competition to drive prices down.
The immediate lowering of the Co-op/Total prices as soon as a competitor had arrived has only fuelled speculation that prices have been kept artificially high.
