A large hole has opened up in the middle of a road in Alnwick town centre.
Police were called to the scene at around 1.30pm today after the hole appeared about halfway up Hotspur Street on the left-hand side as you go up the hill.
It appears that an area of relatively new asphalt has collapsed exposing a hollow beneath the road structure.
The road is closed from the bottom at its junction with Bondgate Without by the Bondgate Tower up to where the road merges into Green Batt by the Tanners Arms pub.
Traffic is being diverted through the Bondgate Tower, although this route is not suitable for larger vehicles such as buses and HGVs. There is still pedestrian access to the street.
Police were liaising with Northumberland County Council and members of staff from the local authority are currently on the scene.
At this stage, it is not known what caused the hole nor how long the road may be closed.
