These were the dramatic scenes as firefighters tackled a huge blaze at a former north Northumberland colliery last night.
Crews from Alnwick attended the incident at Whittle Colliery, just off the A1 south of the town, at around 9.15pm.
A spokeswoman for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was due to a controlled burning. The landowner had been burning off wooden structures at the site.
However, members of the public had raised concerns about the scale of the fire, believing it was out of control, and that smoke was going across the A1.
Fire crews attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.
The site is still smouldering slightly this morning. It is believed the area is due to be cleared by the landowner today.
