Two die in A697 car crash

Two people have died following a collision between two cars on the A697 in Northumberland.

Police were called to the scene, one-and-a-half miles north of New Moor House, at 4.10pm yesterday after receiving reports of a crash involving a Ford Focus and a Mazda.

A man and a woman travelling in the Focus subsequently died from their injuries. The driver of the Mazda was taken to hospital, but is not believed to have been seriously hurt.

The road southbound was closed between the New Moor House crossroads and Bridge of Aln.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69191.
