A 92-year-old nun, who passed away last month, has been described as sincere, genuine and a great community person.

Sister Mary Christopher Geraghty, from the Convent of Mercy, Alnwick, died peacefully in Scarborough Hospital, on Tuesday, January 22.

Tributes have since been paid to a ‘wonderful’ person who was known for her smile.

“She was kind and thoughtful and had considerable ease with establishing a rapport with people,” said Sister Teresa Ronan, from the Alnwick convent.

“She was very well-versed in scripture and her scripture-sharing to us was most inspirational.”

Born in Dublin in June 1920, Sister Christopher moved to England in her early teens.

She joined the Community at Endsleigh, in Hull, and made her First Profession in August 1941.

After training at the college in Endsleigh, she was appointed to St Francis Primary School in Acklam, Middlesbrough – where she would later become headteacher – and moved to North Ormesby Convent.

In 1984, she moved to be Superior in Burnley, before going to Berwick in 1990.

She came to Alnwick in 2006 and acted as sacristan and prepared many eucharistic services.

She was transferred to Whitby Convent in January, before being moved to Scarborough Hospital.

Her Requiem Mass took place in Whitby Convent last week and was well-attended. It was followed by an interment at Whitby Cemetery.
