A former employee at The Alnwick Garden is to take on his former bosses at an employment tribunal next week.

Philip Spencer, from Guildford, in Surrey, had, until last year, held the position of director of development at the world-famous tourist attraction.

But now, he will face The Alnwick Garden Trust at a tribunal, which is listed to start in Newcastle on Monday morning.

The full details have not yet been made public but a spokesman for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service said that Mr Spencer’s grounds for bringing a claim included suffering a detriment and/or dismissal due to exercising rights under the Public Interest Disclosure Act.

He added that Mr Spencer is claiming unfair dismissal on the grounds of capability, conduct or some other general reason including the result of a transfer of an undertaking.

In June, Mr Spencer carried the Olympic Torch through Alnwick.

A spokeswoman for The Alnwick Garden Trust confirmed that Mr Spencer had been employed as director of development.

She added that the Trust ‘strongly refutes’ the claim.

In a statement, she said: “The Alnwick Garden Trust is strongly defending the proceedings but is unable to comment any further at this time pending the employment tribunal.”

The Northumberland Gazette was unable to contact Mr Spencer.
