Toilets make their mark on tourist trail

BELFORD'S public toilets have been turned from a dilapidated eyesore into a potential tourist attraction.

Such has been the transformation of the public conveniences, Belford parish councillors felt they could be a major facility for walkers and cyclists using the village as a hub for their visit to north Northumberland.

Coun Scott said money from her county councillor's allowance had been set aside to ensure disabled access was available.

Councillors were also told that organisers from Belford Energy Saving Together, which is campaigning to reduce the village's energy use by 10 per cent next year, had approached the council with the idea of putting solar panels on the roof as a way of powering the toilet's lights.

At their last meeting, members of the parish council agreed to put the group in touch with the appropriate officer at the county council.

There was even a suggestion that one of Belford's local artists could decorate the walls.
