Thieves take charity box from Alnwick shop
Heartless thieves who stole a charity box in aid of brave troops overseas have been condemned by police.
The collection tin, supporting soldiers in Afghanistan, was stolen from the counter of Trotters Family Bakers, in Bondgate Within, Alnwick.
The sickening incident happened between 2.30pm on Saturday, September 15, and 12.55pm on Monday, September 17.
Alnwick Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Truscott hit out at the thieves.
“This was a heartless theft of a charity box set up in support of our armed forces,” he said.
“It is disgusting to think someone would steal such an item for their own gain – they must have no conscience.
“We’d ask anyone who knows who took this charity box or knows its whereabouts to get in touch so we can take action.”
In a show of support, brothers Michael and Gareth Bateman, who run The Wine Boutique at No. 14, in Alnwick, have offered to help.
The pair usually hold complimentary wine tasting sessions at their Narrowgate-based shop on Saturdays.
To help recoup some of the money which was stolen, the Batemans will be offering wine tasting in their store from tomorrow to Sunday, and will be asking people for a donation.
Michael said: “We were shocked when we heard about the theft at Trotters. It is awful.
“We want to drum up as much support as possible and get people to come along to the wine tasting and donate as much or as little as possible to help raise the money that was stolen from Trotters.”
The wine tasting will be held from 10am to 6pm, tomorrow and Saturday, as well as 11am to 4pm on Sunday.
Anyone with details about the theft should contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
