The eagle has landed

THE largest eagle in England, once extinct in this country, can now be seen again in the North East at the Kielder Birds of Prey Centre.

Sima, a white-tailed sea eagle, the fourth largest eagle in the world, has settled into her new home from Austria, where she was hand-reared since birth.

Weighing more than a stone and with a wing span of nine feet, the enormous four-year-old eagle has been eager to get her know her new family at Northumbrian Water's Leaplish Waterside Park.

Centre owner Ray Lowden said: "The only place you will have a chance to see a white-tailed sea eagle in the wild now is Scotland, where they began reintroducing the species in 2008, and Norway.

"To have one here in England is a real boost for the North East and another fantastic attraction at Kielder Water and Forest Park."

Sima isn't the only new addition to the centre.

A five-month-old African marabou stork called Mandy has also just arrived from the Netherlands.
