Young volunteers have been honoured for their support and commitment at a special awards ceremony at The Alnwick Garden.

A dedicated team of youngsters assist with many aspects of the day-to-day running at the attraction.

On Thursday, the Duchess of Northumberland helped celebrate their efforts, as part of the Young Volunteers Programme.

The initiative was launched in 2012 in partnership with the Duchess’s Community High School and enables young people to gain valuable practical experience as they work alongside staff and other volunteers.

The Duchess said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Alnwick Garden, supporting staff across the board.

“I am particularly interested in the Young Volunteers and see this as a unique opportunity for them to work with the elderly and with children and to develop of sense of responsibility towards to their community.

“It is difficult for young people to get work experience nowadays and The Alnwick Garden offers a great opportunity to any motivated youngster in Northumberland to beef up their CVs.”
