Tesco move rumours played down

Rumours of a supermarket giant eyeing up a derelict factory site in Amble, despite having planning permission for a store elsewhere in the town, have been quashed.

Tesco has consent to construct a supermarket north of Queen Street and adjacent to the Braid.

Development has stalled but work is due to start next year.

But earlier this week, a resident contacted the Gazette and claimed that the company was looking at the possibility of building its new shop at the former Northumberland Foods factory on Coquet Enterprise Park instead.

However, a spokesman for Tesco said this was ‘purely gossip’.

“There is absolutely no truth in this,” he added.

A Northumberland County Council spokeswoman said the authority has not been approached by Tesco with regard to a move to Coquet Enterprise Park.
