A new year and new local heroes to celebrate - the Pride of Northumberland Awards is back for 2012 and we need you to nominate those deserving of recognition.

Who you nominate is your decision, whether it is a child who has battled through adversity, a student who has succeeded against the odds, a group which has strived to support its community or an individual who always puts others first instead of themselves.

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette and sister papers the Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader – and Tweeddale Press, which produces the Berwick Advertiser, the awards pay tribute to the courage, bravery, determination and dedication to the unsung heroes of the county who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and overcome massive hurdles.

The glittering awards ceremony will take place at The Alnwick Garden on Thursday, September 13. Major sponsors this year are Northumberland County Council, Banks Group, Northumbrian Water and NBSL.

The categories for nominations are Child of Achievement, Child of Courage, Community Champion, Community Group, Safer Community, Fund-raiser of the Year, Green Champion, Student of the Year and Sporting Achievement.

All categories are open to nominees over the age of 16, with the exception of the children’s awards.

Three individuals or groups will be chosen to attend the final at The Alnwick Garden, where the winners will be announced.

Stuart Birkett, managing director of Northeast Press, said: “I am delighted that Northeast Press and Tweeddale Press are once again organising the Pride of Northumberland Awards.

“Northumberland has more than its fair share of modest unsung heroes and it is great to celebrate the achievements of some of the best of them in these awards.”

Last year’s Pride of Northumberland Awards were a resounding success, with nine individuals and groups, plus three children, receiving the honours. Nine-year-old Brandon Ballance, Cory Davison, seven, and Ethan Kerr, seven, were jointly given the Matthew Phillips Child of Courage Award, as judges felt they all deserved to win.

The award was renamed last year in memory of five-year-old Matthew Phillips, from Shilbottle, who died after bravely battling a brain tumour for most of his life.

To nominate your local hero, fill in the form opposite and return it to Pride of Northumberland, Northumberland Gazette, 32 Bondgate Without, Alnwick, Northumberland NE66 1PN. The closing date is Friday, August 17.
