Tackling space for sports

There is ‘room for manoeuvre’ over plans to allow youngsters to play sport on facilities at Belford Middle School out of hours.

PC Jeff Craddock had spoken to headteacher Lynne Brooks and while insurance will not allow use of the playing fields, there is the possibility of using one of the hard-court areas.

However, only about two-thirds is fenced and so the parish council will need to look at funding for the extra fencing, as well as nets for netball or basketball or similar equipment.

PC Craddock said that he may be able to approach Lmaps (Local Multi-Agency Problem Solving Group) for additional funding.

He reported that concerns had also been raised about footballs going into gardens when youths are playing on the football field.

The parish council is to talk to the football club, which owns the field, with potential options including taking down the goal near gardens during the week or buying a net for the youths.
