A woman who battled cancer and came through it with a smile has now completed a charity run to help raise funds to support sufferers.
Sue Brierley, who runs the Stable Yard Nursery and Tea Room near Craster, took part in Cancer Research’s Race for Life 10k after suffering from the disease herself.
The Gazette reported in June that Sue, 51, was diagnosed with breast cancer two weeks after taking on the Stable Yard business in January 2013.
She went through courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as an operation.
Now, just over a year after her treatment finished, she has completed the charity run in Newcastle, in 69 minutes and was even its official starter.
Sue said: “I was extremely honoured to be asked by Cancer Research to be the official starter of both 10k and 5k races.
“They asked me to tell my story of recovery before each race, and as we were all there for a common purpose, racing for ourselves, for loved ones who are enduring their own journey through cancer now, or for friends and family who were not so lucky in their battle, tears were frequently seen on many faces in the crowd.
“But what touched me most was as I came off stage to join in the warm-up with the other 10k runners, a woman came up to me with her arms outstretched to hug me, as I looked at her there was a moment of recognition and then the realisation that this was Christine, who sat alongside me on the chemo ward, and endured radiotherapy at the same time as me.
“My recognition of her was somewhat delayed as until Sunday I had not seen Christine with hair; it was fantastic to see her looking so healthy and well - another little fighter and a survivor.
“The camaraderie was brilliant, and I had ladies who had friends or family members going through chemo now ask me as we ran how long it took to put it all behind me; the answer is – ‘what a difference a year makes’.
“I had the most amazing day, met some incredible people and achieved a goal I thought of as impossible this time last year.”
