Now how about this for support! Track and field greats backed our girl by proudly posing with Northumberland Gazette-produced Go Laura! posters.
Two weeks ago, we created the Commonwealth Games memento, encouraging our readers to display them in shops and windows to show support for Laura Weightman, the 23-year-old from Lesbury, Northumberland, who went on to win silver in the 1500m final on Tuesday evening.
Gazette fans did exactly that, including Laura’s grandparents Sandy and Peggie Holden, who put it up at their home.
But the overwhelming show of support has extended past north Northumberland, as this fine selection of pictures show.
Athletics legends such as Denise Lewis, Darren Campbell, Jonathan Edwards, Steve Backley and Steve Cram got behind Laura by having their picture taken with our special poster .
If that wasn’t enough, the pull-out memento, which features a picture of Laura winning the British Championships in June, even got a mention on the BBC, live on air.
Laura’s coach Cram, who commentated on the final for the BBC, said: “Laura has had a lot of support back at home in Northumberland. The Northumberland Gazette had a poster going.”
