Seven rescued from causeway refuge

TOURISTS once again sparked a rescue operation on Holy Island causeway after failing to adhere to safe crossing times.

Seahouses lifeboat crew rescued seven people from the refuge box last Thursday afternoon in stormy conditions.

The visitors, five from Kirkcaldy in Scotland, and two from New Zealand, had attempted to travel to the mainland, in two vehicles, over an hour after the safe crossing time.

The inshore lifeboat was taken to the causeway by Land Rover and made two trips to bring the tourists ashore.

A woman in the group required medical assistance and was transferred to the waiting ambulance. None of the other occupants required treatment.

One of the vehicles, a Volvo Estate, was floating when the crew arrived on the scene.

Police and Seahouses Coastguard unit also attended the incident.

A Seahouses lifeboat spokesman said: “Safe Crossing times are clearly displayed on both sides of the causeway, and on the island itself. If in any doubt, ask one of the locals.”

The crew are often called to rescue people from the causeway during the summer months.

This was the crew’s first call-out of the year.
