Set your alarms for torch send-off

EARLY risers are being invited to Alnwick’s Big Breakfast to give the Olympic Torch a good send-off.

It is being held on Friday, June 15, to coincide with the early morning departure of the Olympic Torch Relay.

It will take place in the Market Place, starting at 6.30am.

It is hoped that members of the public will set their alarm clocks early and come along for breakfast before giving the torch a rousing send-off when it leaves at 7.28am.

All four cafes in the Market Place are planning on opening early. There will be crepes on sale and Turnbull’s butchers will be serving bacon butties.

Ray Scott, a classic rock soloist, will be performing hits from the likes of Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams and Thin Lizzy.

Children from St Michael’s First School in Alnwick will be forming a Guard of Honour for the torch when it heads off on its journey across the county and beyond.

Festival of Alnwick co-ordinator Karen Larkin has been working alongside Northumberland County Council to organise the breakfast event.

She said: “The torch will not be coming to Alnwick again in our lifetime. It will be a momentous occasion and a great honour to have the torch in the town overnight.

“We really want as many people as possible to turn out and give all those involved a warm Northumberland send-off.”
