Rugby club scores on two fronts in unforgettable day

Alnwick Rugby Club scored its very own super Sunday – breaking a world record before raising tens of thousands of pounds for an ambitious development project.

A team of 15 from the Greensfield outfit kicked 3,501 conversions in less than 12 hours, emphatically beating the previous record set around a decade ago by Braintree Rugby Club U15s.

Alnwick are now waiting for verification to make the achievement official.

The challenge, which took place on Sunday, was not the only bit of good news on the day, as a fund-raising event that night helped collect close to £40,000 to help with upgrades at Greensfield.

It means the club is edging ever closer to its £85,000 target to help fund the work, having raised around £65,000 so far.

Penny Stewart, chairman of the sub-committee tasked with leading the project, which includes new changing rooms and a gym, said: “It was an incredible day. The team did a fantastic job in the world-record attempt.

“The previous record was 1,782 conversions in 12 hours. The lads started at 7.30am and beat the record by noon and then kept going and were cheered on by a good crowd.

“About 300 people came to the club in the evening and we are overwhelmed by people’s generosity.”

An auction raised £26,000 on the night while Barclays has offered to donate to the cause.

The fund-raising continues. Call 07835 513602 for details.
