Rothbury the target for more housing

Northumberland Estates, which has received planning permission for several developments in Rothbury in recent years, has submitted another bid for new homes.

The outline application, with all matters reserved, is for nine properties on land to the south of Hillside Road West, at the top of Gravelly Bank.

The scheme is only in outline at this stage, but the homes are likely to be three to five-bedroomed properties, which will look like single-storey dwellings from the road, but will actually be two-storey with room in the roof due to the slope of the hillside.

The rear of the houses and the gardens will look out across the Coquet to the other side of the valley.

Current government legislation means that there is no obligation to provide affordable housing as part of developments of less than 10 properties.

Many in Rothbury feel that the village is taking more than its fair share of development, particularly when viewed against the proposed housing figures for the period up to 2031 in the county council’s draft core strategy.

This issue was among the objections raised during the fight against the Estates’ controversial application for 57 homes on either side of Garleigh Road, which was approved earlier this year.
