Repairs are appalling, claim angry residents

Furious residents have criticised footpath repair works in their street, branding them
an abomination and dangerous.
People in North Street, Amble, are appalled at the state of the job which has been carried out close to their homes.
The work started just before Christmas but stopped over the festive period – leaving it in a ‘disgusting’ state.
Northumberland County Council has said that the improvements are to be finished shortly, and to the authority’s satisfaction.
But nearby residents are not impressed.
They are angry at the state of the work which has been done so far and claim various hazards were left over the holiday period.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “We are a laughing stock down here.
“There are kerb stones sticking up and the path has been left.
“It is dangerous and it is atrocious.
“Honestly, have you ever seen a footpath like that?
“This would never have happened in the middle of Alnwick and Morpeth.”
She also said that there had been no prior warning to inform residents that the work was to be carried out.
Concerns were also raised by another resident, who said: “You have got to be there to appreciate the mess it is in.
“It is appalling.
“It is a botched job and looks like it has been done quickly.
“The residents have been left through the whole Christmas and New Year period with this.
“Everybody who has seen it is disgusted with it – and that’s not just the residents living nearby either.
“Apart from the fact that it is unsightly, there were hazards left. There is a hazard outside every single door.
“The county council may turn around and say that it hasn’t been completed yet, but the work should have been completed because there are trip hazards.
“It is a danger to footing.
“If they say it is still to be completed, then we’ll see what happens, but what they have done so far is an eyesore.”
A spokeswoman for Northumberland County Council said: “We are aware that there is still some repair work to be finished off to the footpaths on North Street.
“A sub-contractor began the repair work on North Street before Christmas , but this was interrupted by the holiday break.
“We will make sure that they finish off the job to our satisfaction.”
On the lack of consultation issue, she said: “We wouldn’t usually inform the public in advance of minor maintenance work of this type, which we carry out every day around the county.
“Part of the problem with this job was that unknown people had written in the wet concrete just before Christmas so we will be taking that up and relaying the concrete on the footpath again.
“This should be done over the next week.”
