Relief as boundary plans revised

Controversial plans to move a north Northumberland ward into another constituency have been revised, to the delight of campaigners.

As part of a project to reduce the number of MPs across the country, the Boundary Commission had announced that it wanted to move the Rothbury and Coquetdale ward, which is currently in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency, into the Hexham constituency.

But this week, as part of the Commission’s revised proposals, it was revealed that the Coquetdale ward is set to stay put.

The Commission says there was evidence to show that Rothbury and Coquetdale had links with Alnwick, Berwick and Morpeth, rather than Hexham.

Ward member Steven Bridgett said: “After the enormous response from residents right across Coquetdale, Whittingham Vale and Redesdale, the Boundary Committee has revised its proposals.

“I’ve no doubt that this is down to the responses it received from local residents.”

A recommendation has also been made to rename the Berwick constituency as Berwick, Alnwick and Morpeth.

The consultation on the revised proposals is open and comments can be made until December 10.
