Red diesel swoop

CUSTOMS officials swooped on traders at Thropton Show as part of a sting operation into illegal fuel use.

Officers from HMRC found two vehicles illegally using red diesel at Saturday's show.

It is believed one vehicle was owned by a showman and the other belonged to a sweet seller, both from the Wearside area.

The pair were hit with on-the-spot fines, and will be subject to further enquiries.

An HMRC spokesman said: "We do attend these types of show to police the use of rebated fuels.

"It is illegal to use red diesel or rebated fuel in commercial or private road vehicles and the duty lost through this crime costs the public purse billions of pounds each year."

A Thropton show official said: "Customs have a job to do the same as everybody else."
