A North East brewery has produced a new beer to commemorate the new play about north Northumberland heroine Grace Darling.

Tyneside-based Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, whose international and national stage hits include Dirty Dusting, Waiting For Gateaux, Maggie’s End and Son of Samurai, have penned Amazing Grace as a tribute to Grace and to celebrate the North East’s close links with life-saving at sea.

And Jarrow Brewery has now launched Amazing Grace, a 4.6 per cent pale golden real ale with orangey and passion fruit flavours and a subtle hop aroma.

The beer will be available throughout Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire.

Jess McConnell, owner of Jarrow Brewery, said: “Our previous beer to celebrate a play by Ed and Trevor was Maggie’s End and that is still proving hugely popular in the North East.

“We are delighted to be associated with the playwrights again and to mark the selflessness of Grace Darling with Amazing Grace.

“We plan to roll out Amazing Grace so it is available throughout the North East and North, from Berwick in north Northumberland to North Yorkshire.”

And this is the fourth time that Ed and Trevor have tied in a pint to their plays.

As well as now producing Amazing Grace, Jarrow Brewery also brewed Maggie’s End while Maxim Brewery, based at Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham, produced Lipton Ale for Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather.

The Geltsdale Brewery in Cumbria created Drizzlewort for It’s Grim Up North.

Amazing Grace, which has its premiere at Alnwick Playhouse next Wednesday and the three-week North East tour will consist of 23 dates.

The Playhouse, which hosts performances on the Thursday and Friday as well, is also co-producing the play.

It tells the story of Grace Darling through the eyes of a modern-day writer called Grace who wants to make a film about her famous namesake, although it doesn’t all go to plan.

A collection will be held for the RNLI after each of the 23 shows on the tour.

Tickets are available from the Playhouse on 01665 510785 orwww.alnwickplayhouse.co.uk
