Rain halts show

Organisers have been forced to cancel Northumberland’s last agricultural show of the season, after torrential rain left their field a quagmire.

Alwinton Border Shepherds’ Show would have been staged next Saturday, but its committee had no option but to pull the plug due to serious waterlogging.

It is the first time in more than 150 years that the weather has halted the popular gathering, which attracts exhibitors and visitors from across the North East and Scotland.

The only other times the show has been cancelled were following the foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks of 1967 and 2001. Secretary Bessie Rogerson said: “We are very disappointed but had little choice but to cancel. The field is absolutely saturated.”
