Royal Air Force and civilian personnel have been recognised for their achievements.

Taking place in the Officer’s Mess at RAF Boulmer, station commander Group Captain Paul Atkinson presented the awards and honours at a special ceremony for recipients and their family and friends.

He said: “Many of our personnel have made an important contribution to overseas operations, but a lot of the work on station is not glamorous.

“It is the day to day work that goes on in the background by engineers, technicians and support staff who provide the essential services without which we could not operate.”

A few days later, Year 9 pupils from James Calvert Spence College, in Amble, visited the base to take part in the latest initiative from RAF Boulmer’s Youth Activities Working Group.

They were transported back in time to 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain to become Second World War RAF Commanders, intelligence analysts, plotters and tote writers, all playing a vital role as the Battle evolved.

The project was designed to enhance pupils’ learning in the key areas of science, technology, English and mathematics.

The day developed pupils’ communication and leadership skills.
