Air Officer Commanding Number 1 Group (AOC 1 Gp), Air Vice Marshal S D Atha, presents the Honours and Awards at RAF Boulmer while conducting the Annual Formal Inspection.

Staff and personnel at RAF Boulmer have been recognised for their efforts in a ceremony at the base.

Air Vice-Marshal Stu Atha, Air Officer Commanding Number 1 Group, presented the awards.

He acknowledged the hard work and dedication of RAF Boulmer and its personnel over the last year, especially last summer when they played a crucial role in the delivery of the air security plan for the London 2012 Olympics.

And he also paid tribute to the families of service personnel who provide essential support, especially when their loved ones are serving abroad for long periods of time.

After the presentation Air Vice-Marshal Atha said: “I would like to pay tribute to you today for the outstanding service you have provided to your country at home and on operations overseas.

“Several of you have received commendations for your work during the Olympics where, as aerospace battle managers, you played a key role in delivering a safe and secure games.

“Unlike Operational Service Medals, which recognise service that is measured in months, the long service and good conduct medal is presented to those who have delivered a career’s worth of commitment and support to the RAF; and thus better recognises the contribution and sacrifice made throughout one’s service.

“Regardless of the medal or commendation you have received, all of you have shown extraordinary drive and dedication in all that you have done on behalf of your station and the service.

“We have today recognised individuals but we enjoy our greatest successes when we work together as a team; and there is no better example of that than here at RAF Boulmer where your teamwork and team spirit is exemplary.”

The following awards were handed out to staff and service personnel: Joint Commander’s Commendation for Operation Olympic, given for meritorious service during the London 2012 Olympics – Sqn Ldr Andy Cooper; Flt Lt Adam Lynn; WO Craig Smith.

Air Officer Commanding Number 1 Group Commendation, which recognises the meritorious service that the recipient or team has rendered to the Royal Air Force – Mrs Lesley Grey; CRC Simulator Section.

Operational Service Medal with clasp Afghanistan – Flt Lt Becky Canlett; Fg Off Simon Bracewell; Sgt Hilary Wilson; Sgt Scot Rowntree.

Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, awarded for at least 15 years’ unblemished service – Sgt Fiona Simpson; Sgt John Young; Cpl Neil Skeldon.

50 years’ service to the Ministry of Defence – Mr Dave Chappell.

RAF Boulmer was also awarded the Youth Activities Liaison Officer Trophy which is awarded to the Royal Air Force station that has done the most to promote RAF Youth Activities in their local area during the previous year.
