Queen’s Baton Relay: Flags of the Commonwealth

Waiting for Video...

The start of the stage show at the Queen’s Baton Relay event at Alnwick Castle tonight was welcomed by a torrential downpour.

The heavy rain just before 6pm turned the crowd into a sea of umbrellas, but didn’t seem to deter anyone from staying to watch the show, which celebrated the journey of the baton through the 68 Commonwealth nations prior to England – the 69th and the last before host nation Scotland.

The flags were carried by the bearers by continent and in the order in which the baton visited them. Each continent was led in by one of the Northumberland batonbearers – Shannon Tyler and Les Welsh, from Blyth, and Zac Allin, from Prudhoe.

The fourth Northumberland batonbearer – Paralympic gold medallist Stephen Miller, from Cramlington – had the honour of carrying the baton itself to the stage, accompanied by the England flag.

BBC Radio Newcastle’s Jonathan Miles was the compere for the evening, while music was provided by Americana band The Last Spectacular.

See next Thursday’s Gazette for a full report and pictures of the Queen’s Commonwealth Baton Relay in Alnwick.
