Quashed turbine applications back before committee
Two wind turbine applications, which were approved earlier this year before being thrown out by the High Court, are back before the planning committee.
At tonight’s meeting of Northumberland County Council’s north area planning committee, members are recommended to approve a single turbine, 47metres to blade tip, at Brackenside Farm, Ford, and another, 34metres to blade tip, at New Haggerston Farm.
The turbines were both approved in February this year, but were subject to a Judicial Review, which was taken to the High Court by anti-wind turbine campaigner Andrew Joicey.
The approvals were quashed and are now back before the committee, although the turbine at New Haggerston has already been erected.
This turbine is located about 1.5km to the west of the A1 and Haggerston Dovecote, a Grade ll-listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, is located approximately 1km to the north east.
Five residents have raised objections to the application, along with Ancroft Parish Council.
However, the planning officer concludes that ‘it is considered that the area could accommodate a single turbine at the scale proposed’.
It goes on to say that as the turbine is already up, the visual impact can be assessed and is not such that it would justify refusal.
The turbine at Ford appears to be more controversial with 43 objections from residents, as well as from Lowick Parish Council.
There are 28 letters of support for the scheme, though.
The planning officer again concludes that the area could accommodate a single turbine.
The report states: “The proposed turbine would not be visible from the majority of the wider Kyloe Hills and Glendale Areas of High Landscape Value and although it may be possible to view the turbine from certain selected locations these views would be limited and would not adversely affect the special qualities of the rural landscape.”
Tonight’s meeting of the county council’s north area planning committee takes place in Alnwick as usual, but has been moved to the Northumberland Hall.
The start time remains 6pm.
