A north Northumberland butcher has taken the title in the North East’s Rural Oscars and will go on to represent the region on the national stage.

The North East of England’s Champions in the 2012 Countryside Alliance Awards have been announced and R Green and Son in Longframlington won the butcher’s category.

The family company, which will celebrate 125 years in business next year, won the title in 2010 and was highly commended last year.

Owner Chris Green previously told the Gazette that they were ‘thrilled’ to be in the running, ‘especially as we are the only butcher in Northumberland to be named as a finalist’.

North East judge Anne-Marie Treveylan said: “This local butcher is uncompromising in his support for local farmers and the community he serves with such dedication.

“Everything sold is local, and this is no mean feat since there is no local abattoir, but it is important to Chris that his customers can drive past future produce in the local fields and have a peace of mind about the traceability of what they are buying.

“It is especially important in light of the horsemeat scandal that traceability and labeling is paramount, and the short, transparent food chain here reflects the importance of that.

“It is the only truly sustainable way forward for our food industry.

“The customer service is as good as the produce – Chris and the team support local businesses and schools and are truly part of this rural community.

“Sausages from Greens are part of the local culture and I am proud to honour Greens with this award.”

Eleanor’s Byre, near Embleton, was highly commended in the start-up category.

The winners will go on to represent the North East at the UK & Ireland finals at Parliament in Westminster on Wednesday, March 13.

The awards are the Countryside Alliance’s annual celebration of rural produce, skills, enterprise and heritage through our small hard-working businesses.

They are now in their eighth year and have become the definitive rural business award.
