The fourth Felton First School Friends Boat and Duck Races were held on the River Coquet, at Felton.

Sue Inglis- Jones, who organises the annual event, said: “Despite the challenge of trying to dodge the rain this year - by rescheduling to a 4pm start - a good crowd turned out to watch this year’s event and cheer on their ducks and boats.

“The event has raised over £1,000 for Felton First School and we thank all the people who bought a duck and sponsored boat. This year saw the introduction of an additional race of ‘mini-ducks’ that had been individually painted by the children at school.“

Seventy-two brightly-coloured contenders took to the water in a short sprint race sponsored by Mark & Jane Gatiss of Scarab4.

The winning duck was painted by Tess Hindmarsh.

The second race saw 23 model boats designed and made by the Adventurers class (Years 3 & 4) and made from recycled materials.

GA Smith was this year’s winning boat sponsor, remarkably building on a win last year as well.

The winning boat was built by Year 4 pupil Hannah Johnston. The final part was the main duck race where a record 676 ducks took to the water. The winning duck, owned by Kaye Thompson, won by some margin but it was a close run thing for the other four prizes (second Joely Hindmarsh, third Robin McAllister, fourth Millie Pentleton, fifth Ella Morris).

Prizes for the duck race had once again been donated by The Running Fox.
