Pupils learn the write way to save the planet

Children at a north Northumberland first school are on a green mission to collect used pens that would otherwise end up in landfill.
The BIC Writing Instruments Brigade programme, in partnership with London-based Terracycle, has been encouraging schools and businesses across the UK to collect used pens, markers, highlighters and other writing instruments in order for them to be recycled and re-used in a different form.
Pupils from Wooler First School are currently earning two points in exchange for every pen, marker, highlighter and mechanical pencil they collect and return. Each point earned can then be redeemed for a one pence contribution to the school.
Dave Sage, from the school’s Parent Teacher Association, said: “The school joined the BIC Writing Instruments Brigade in November 2012, but already we have collected over 700 writing instruments.
In total we have raised £65 through the TerraCycle recycling fund-raising brigade programmes which the school plans to use towards additional classroom resources and extra-curricular activities.
“But the real value for the school is how excited the children have become about the amount of writing instruments and other waste packaging they can save.”
